If you've been living under a rock (or so ingrained in habit that you still use clunky, bug-infested and sickly old Internet Explorer), there is a fatabulous and spanking new browser called Firefox that workd better, is more stable, hardy, way faster and sports more features than a late-model Bimmer. Firefox is free, and can be downloaded for most platforms at

But believe it or not things can still be improved with a few tweaks, nips and tucks. Firefox can be made to break speed barriers still, particularly if you're on broadband. Read on for how-to:

#1 Assuming you've downloaded and installed it, fire up Firefox.

#2 In that little space where you type in URLs (or web addresses, if you prefer), type this phrase -- "about:config" and hit return. It won't take you to a site, but rather open up the preference settings of your browser. You'll be hit by a faceful of text. Don't worry about it.

#3 Scroll down and look for "network.http.pipelining". Click on the line and you'll be given a choice of "true or "false". Choose "true"

#4 Find "network.http.proxy.pipelining". Same deal; change it to "true" as well.

#5 Find "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and click on it -- a menu will pop up that allows you to input a number. Type in a large one. (Around 30 would be good.)

#6 Right-click (Mac users with a sungle button can Control-Click) anywhere in the window and select New > Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" set its value to "0". (zero.)

What did you just do? You enabled pipelining for a couple of processes. Pipelining allows your computer to do simultaneous requests for pages at the same time, as opposed to just one at a time. Ergo, faster. You've likewise increased the number of requests possible at any one time, and removed a significant bottleneck.

Try it and you'd be shocked at how things zip along.
